It makes sense, he probably lost on purpose. If he were to win it there would be mass bitching from everybody about how he cheated or had an advantage from knowing the courses intimately.

He's not actually a very gifted driver, technically speaking. He was mid-pack when he was racing and afaik he doesn't really race anymore. But he's great at marketing himself and he brought trick driving into the mainstream.

I think the announcers were right on. As far as making it look awesome and lots of tire smoke and noise he's great. Being fast at it? Not so much.
